West Orchards Win Marketing Award

17th May 2010

The elite marketeers of the retail property industry gathered at BCSC’s (British Council of Shopping Centre’s) annual Purple Apple Marketing Awards Dinner last week (Wednesday 12 May) at the prestigious City of London venue, The Brewery, to celebrate this year’s top shopping centre campaigns.

Over 120 entries were submitted this year, displaying a vast array of exceptional talent and creative marketing techniques across the retail property industry. From these entries three Purple Apples were awarded for imagination, innovation and excellence in shopping centre marketing, 19 Merits and one Purple Apple Pip winner.

Coventry’s very own West Orchards Shopping Centre won a Purple Apple Merit award for their Bears in the Air event that was held on the 31st January this year.

“Bears in the Air” was the brainchild of Coventry Kid Cathy Tennant, the centre’s Administration Manager. Children were invited to get their Teddy bear sponsored and then take a zip wire from the level 5 car park, down to the level 2 food court.

The event was very successful and raised £1,200 for NSPCC Coventry.

Centre Manager Andy Talbot said; “I am thrilled that the centre was recognised for our hard work. Our team is always thinking up new ideas to bring more customers to the centre, as this was a charity event our suppliers generously donated their services for free”

BCSC Chief Executive Michael Green commented; “I am delighted at the calibre of the entrants that we had this year. Shopping centres are thinking of new and innovative ways to engage their local communities in order to meet the needs of the public and in turn drive sales. The success of these marketing campaigns highlights the growing importance of property marketeers and the increasingly influential role they play within the industry.”

Deborah Owen-Ellis Clark, BCSC Purple Apple Task Force Chair added;
“It is fantastic to celebrate the huge range of marketing and communication campaigns that have taken place over the last twelve months. This year’s winners have shown us some great marketing techniques and they are greatly deserving of their victory. On behalf of BCSC I would like to congratulate them on their achievements.”
