Abseil in West Orchards
In the heart of Coventry, local daredevils have been given exclusive access to the iconic West Orchards Shopping Centre for an after-hours, 100ft abseil. Lit up in blue lights, participants will abseil from the top of the centre’s glass dome roof to the ground below.
The exhilarating event is raising money for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, Tesco’s Charity of the Year 2010. It will help Tesco and CLIC Sargent to achieve their goal of raising £5 million to fund specialist cancer nurses so that children can spend more time at home and less time in hospital.
Around 10 families a day are told that their child has cancer. CLIC Sargent Patron, Kai, has first-hand experience of the work that CLIC Sargent does to support those families affected. He said: “My cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was thirteen and is currently undergoing treatment ten years on.
“CLIC Sargent Nurses bridge the gap between hospital and going home, helping children spend more time with their family and friends, and less time in hospital or on the road so they can live as much of a normal life as possible. They go to into family’s homes, help manage their medication and can even visit their school to explain what is happening.
“This is a shout-out to every adrenalin junkie in Coventry to sign up for this amazing night abseil challenge and help us reach our target of £20,000 so that as many families as possible can benefit from CLIC Sargent nurses. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Go on, I dare you!”
Abseilers are asked to pay £10 to register, and raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship. A CLIC Sargent t-shirt will be given to anyone who raises more than £200 and a prize will be awarded to the top fundraiser.
Sophie Crossman, CLIC Sargent Event Fundraising Manager, said: “A night time abseil is really exciting. The Centre is an amazing venue and it’s going to be a real spectacle for the fundraisers taking part and those supporting them.”
